Bird proofing is an important consideration where there is a likelihood of RF feeders and connector weatherproofing being attacked and damaged by birds, or other animals. Galahs, Cockatoos and Corellas are the primary culprits that have been observed to cause such damage to feeder equipment. Critical Ethernet and coaxial communications run in many industrial facilities are at risk of attack from rodents which are known to chew PVC and PE cable jackets particularly.
Cables with an outer diameter less than 1/2", such as Cat5/6 Ethernet, RG58, LMR195, and LMR400, are at particular risk. Stainless steel cable ties are also recommended for use in high risk areas.
While many high quality coaxial and Ethernet cables have a good level of shielding from nearby RF sources, stainless braiding can be used to add another layer of protection against EMI/RFI coupling and crosstalk. Particularly useful in applications where communications are run parallel with power or other unshielded cables.
Stainless steel braid must be isolated from contact with other metallic components. Contact or rubbing against a metal surface may result in PIM interference. It is also important that stainless steel braiding not be installed on the antenna tail, within proximity of the antenna, or in the path of the centre lobe.
